Acosta, who is only 17 years old but is already creating waves in the sport, came into Assen with a mentality that was refined by his quick ascent and his profound comprehension of the unpredictable nature of the sport. Acosta stated up front in a post-race interview that "I knew Assen was not going to be easy for me." This statement captures his humility as well as his keen understanding of the demands of racing in the MotoGP class. Because of its fast, flowing layout and difficult bends, the Assen track requires riders to be precise and flexible. It was a difficult course for Acosta to navigate, especially given his relative inexperience in comparison to some of his more experienced rivals.

Acosta delivered a very outstanding performance at Assen in spite of these difficulties. He proved to be more mature than his years during the race weekend, continuously cutting lap times and exhibiting a sharp ability to pick up new skills from each session. Inherent talent plus a calculated approach to racing allowed him to maintain his competitive edge and turn in a remarkable performance. The actual race had all the drama and intensity that fans of the MotoGP have grown accustomed to. In a closely contested field, Acosta fought valiantly, displaying his ability to pass and his aggressive racing style. He remained cool under pressure as the laps wound down, and he finished admirably, highlighting his developing reputation as a potential future sports star.
