Ortola put up a strong fight in the tough battle for pole position. As both drivers gave their machines their best in an effort to gain any edge on the difficult course, the margins were extremely narrow. In the end, Alonso's expertise and ability to remain composed under duress proved to be crucial, as he narrowly won pole position.
